RIP Steely

Last week tuesday, on september the first, Wycliffe Johnson aka Steely from the duo Steely and Clevie died from a heart-attack in a NY hospital. With this loss, Jamaica loses once again one of the true originators of dancehall.
Especially we from Digital Reggae must pay our tribute to Steely as about 50% of all the music on this blog is played by him.
Big Up Steely! And thanks for all your work, you've made this world a better place! Rest in peace, big man.
Please leave some comments, stories about Steely, anything.

  5. Some stories about Steely:
    - One of the first albums Steely and Clevie recorded together was "Africa Must Be Free By 1983", recorded in Lee Perry's Black Ark studio for Augustus Pablo. Steely played drums and was 12 years old!
    - He directed the Roots Radics to 'the' band of the new dancehall music in the early 80's. It was he who had the perfect understanding of a minimal, raw-basic kind of reggae.
    - Steely was a loud, raggamuffin caracter, some people even called him boasy. Not everybody liked him.
    - Around 1987 Steely & Clevie recorded about 10 singles a week for Jammy's, They also gigged for most of the other producers in Jamaica.
